The Red Deer United FC- U18 Tier 1 boys indoor season concluded with a home field victory Feb 28 against the Edmonton Storm. In the tier 1 Edmonton league the boys ended up 3 points out a medal, battling the entire season in a very close race. The team was plagued all season by injuries both on and off the field. However as they prepare for tier 1 Provincials at the end of March they look to have a near healthy line up for one of the first times this season. The team realizes they will need everyone healthy to compete as they play the top Calgary and Edmonton teams in the first two rounds, an experience the boys are looking forward to.
The boys played in the Saskatoon SISCO- 7v7 tournament this past winter at the Sasktel soccer center. The team played against Edmonton Inter and two top teams from Saskatoon. This was a big step up for this young team as they were missing their keeper and a top defense who were training with ASA. However in typical style, others stepped up and covered the positions needed. The final game was close, losing 4-3 V Saskatoon. (See pictures on team page)
Team Captain Dallas Hughes is recovering from his injury nicely and the team expects to see him back on the team in late Spring. Hayden and Mark have stepped into the Captain and Assistant role for the team and have done a fine job.
Tryouts for the team commence within a few weeks and the team is looking forward to a large number of players coming out that have expressed interest in playing. The team plans to enter as many quality tournaments as possible across Western Canada and America as they prepare for 18-1 outdoor Provincials.
The team is playing good quality soccer and have become a legitimate threat every game they play. They worked hard this winter entering 18-1 in both league, tournaments and Provincials and it is paying off. All players have adapted to the fast and more physical game, they realize that in the short term they need to play up so they can be strong contenders at tier-1 for many years to come. The theme of the team for this season has been "pay the big price in order to experience the big rewards."
Thank you Omar and Tony for the excellent tech sessions. The boys have enjoyed over 10- 1.5hr sessions with the trainers and have enjoyed every minute.
Lastly thank you to the UnitedFC Club, teams and fans. Every home game was lined with supporters cheering and the teams every play.
The best is yet to come!
