Congratulations to the U-18 Girls Silver Medal Win!
The Red Deer United U-18 Tier 2 girl's team earned a silver medal over the weekend in the Red Deer Girls tournament. The United team started the tournament off with a 2-1 win over the Calgary NDS Heat. Scoring for United was Claire Wallace and Michelle Roth. Allison Doll was in net for United and made some great saves. The team overall played a solid game and considering that this tournament was the first time the whole team was together it was a solid result. The second game in the tournament the girls played Spruce Grove saints and won the game 3-0. The girls played a much more controlled game and moved the ball very well. Allison Doll recorded the shut out. The win put the team in line for the gold medal game verses the Blizzard Avalanche from Calgary who were also undefeated.
The gold medal game ended in tie 1-1 and because of the tie breaking rules for the tournament the Blizzard Avalanche earned the gold medal. The United girls scored first when Paula Dadensky forced the Calgary keeper to rush a clearing pass and the ball deflected off one their defenders in to the net. The Avalanche scored early in the second half on a set play. The rest of the game the team pressured the Avalanche and had several great scoring chances and just missed putting in the winning goal on several occasions. Again Allison Doll was in net and played very well and had no chance on the Calgary goal.
The girls played with passion and heart for the three games of the tournament and showed they can play with any team in the Province. The success of the team is a direct result of their passion for the game and the technical program that the club has with Omar Martinez and Tony Sheehan.
Well done girls!
